Position Information
Classification Title Nurse Practitioner III FLSA Exempt FTE 0.75 Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent and 5 years of professional experience
Preferred Qualifications
UHC Minimum:
• Master's degree in an Accredited Nursing Education Program with licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse.
• Licensure to practice in the State of Georgia required by date of first employment.
• Five or more years experience in working with young adults suffering from mental health disorders
UHC Preferred:
• Two years of clinical experience in a college or university counseling or mental health setting.
• Professional familiarity with brief assessment, crisis intervention, medication evaluation, and medication monitoring.
• Certified as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Psychiatric/Mental Health (410-12-.01) in the State of Georgia.
Position Summary
CAPS Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners provide age appropriate, time limited, crisis intervention as well as acute, chronic (within the CAPS scope of service), and preventive psychiatric care to students and eligible members of the University community. They provide initial evaluations for psychopharmacological interventions based on the presenting concern, clinical interview, subjective questionnaires, and consultation with counseling staff. Practitioners synthesize objective and subjective data to formulate a conceptualization of the client's diagnoses, primary problem, and basic plan for medication management or other recommended intervention. They also make internal and external referrals as indicated following practice guidelines and CAPS scope of service.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced work environment.
- Training and skills in providing telehealth services.
- Familiarity with accreditation (JC, APA, IACS) requirements and standards.
- Familiarity in the evaluation and treatment of AOD, ED, and/or ADD/ADHD.
- Interest in mental health outreach programming.
- Ability to work with an electronic health care system such as PnC.
- Background working in a setting involved in the training and supervision of counseling and psychotherapy to students in training or post-graduate professionals.
Sitting for extended periods, talking, hearing corrected to normal, corrected visual acuity adequate to utilize the electronic health record.

Client/Patient Direct Services:
- Provides acute, short-term, chronic (within the scope of our service), and preventative psychiatric care.
- Conduct psychiatric assessments and formulate diagnoses for college-aged individuals.
- Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications, ensuring safe and effective treatment per written nurse protocol.
- Performs consultation evaluations based on the referring problem(s) and data from the client's intake paperwork.
- Formulates specific treatment plan treatment or referral based on conceptualization of the client's and referring clinicians' concerns. Skilled in working with a wide range of student issues within the context of the students' age and progress in adult development.
- Initiates and monitors treatment plan and effectiveness of care for each student.
- Provide psychoeducation to students regarding mental health conditions and treatment options.
- Participate in crisis intervention and risk assessment for students in distress.
- Support campus-wide mental health initiatives, outreach, and prevention programs.
- Refer students to appropriate off-campus resources when necessary.
- Collaborate with psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, primary care providers, and case managers.
Administrative Tasks and Meetings:
- Attends and participates in UHC annual meetings/trainings, staff meetings, and team meetings as requested or required.
- Maintain accurate documentation in the electronic health record system.
- Pursues professional education that is directed towards the age specific needs of our treatment population.
- Contributes to the UHC culture of service to students. This may be manifested by maintaining flexibility to take on new tasks when asked and in collaborating with other CAPS and UHC staff in working on new projects and tasks as needed to further our mission.
- Communicate effectively and professionally in all interactions with staff, students, and other stakeholders.
- Collaborates effectively as a member of a team, takes leadership responsibility for completion of tasks when indicated, and satisfies team expectations regarding work habits.
- Other duties as required.

Professional Development
- Participates in Performance Improvement activities of the clinic.
- Identifies opportunities to improve clinical outcomes, including workflow efficiency, treatment effectiveness and strategies for change to improve therapeutic and clinical performance.
- Develop recommendations to improve services for specific populations using data from our clinical population.
- Obtains appropriate continuing education credits.
