Description
A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse with a minimum of a Master's Degree in Nursing who has completed formal didactic and clinical training at an accredited institution. Requirements include education in advanced health assessment, pharmacology, and clinical and diagnostic decision-making. Nurse practitioners must be board certified by examination by an approved certifying body. NPs work independently and in collaboration with physicians and other health care professionals. NPs provide primary and specialty health care to new and established patients, assess and manage common acute and chronic illnesses, consult and make referrals and collaborate with physicians and other members of the health care team. Provision of care includes, but is not limited to, comprehensive assessment and physical examination, ordering, conducting and interpreting diagnostic tests, diagnosing and directly managing acute and chronic disease, promoting wellness, prescription of pharmacological agents and treatments, and as well as non-pharmacological therapies, and appropriate follow-up. Teaching and counseling individuals, families, and groups are a significant part of NP activities. NPs are also expected to serve as mentors, and to participate in clinical improvement and research projects as appropriate to the clinical setting.

Requirements
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a Master of Science Degree in Nursing from a Nurse Practitioner program. *Establishes and maintains current practice agreement with collaborating Mayo Clinic Rochester consultant physician(s). *Note: As of 1991, a Master of Science Degree in Nursing became the required educational preparation required for certification with the exception of Women's Health certification. This certification has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing as a minimum education requirement for certification. A Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) is preferred. Current Minnesota registered nurse license. Certified or eligible to be certified as a nurse practitioner before employment date by a national clarifying organization accepted by the Minnesota Board of Nursing. Certain positions may require DEA registration. BLS certification required. Certain positions may require additional life support certification. As of January 1, 2015 a current MN Advanced Practice Registered Nurse license.
