Manager, Prospect Research

The National MS Society leads the global MS movement, achieving more breakthroughs than world has seen for any other neurological disease. Today, we’ve never been closer to a cure – the next chapter in our story could be the last chapter for MS. The Society needs a talented Prospect Research professional to further accelerate our progress by expanding our prospect pipeline and informing transformational relationships that result in revenue growth.   

The Manager, Prospect Research plays a key role in achieving the organization’s ambitious acquisition and revenue growth goals by leading a comprehensive prospect research program, offering strategic research services, training, resources and tools to fundraisers across the organization to inform smart, insight-based funder acquisition, engagement, solicitation and stewardship. The serves as a strategic partner provide strategic research insights that inform cultivation and solicitation strategies using a wide variety of ethical sources to analyze and synthesize intelligence revealing financial capacity, philanthropic tendencies, and linkages to MS and Society’s priorities. The position also works cross-functionally to apply systematic research practices to develop proactive prospect pipelines. To promote the Society’s interest in “knowing” prospects to develop transformational relationships, the position develops and promotes universal prospect research resources, tools, and knowledge develop opportunities, and oversees data integrity activities to gain cultural consensus on the power of prospect research.

In addition to Prospect Research activities, the position is also responsible for managing data and resource solutions that facilitate exceptional donor experiences and engagement.

  1. Prospect Research (60%)
    1. Serve as a strategic partner to Development and Community Leadership staff to provide research insights that inform donor and prospect engagement strategies using a wide variety of ethical sources to analyze and synthesize intelligence revealing financial capacity, philanthropic tendencies, and linkages to MS and Society’s priorities.
  1. Develop major gift prospect profiles according to prospect research menu, discovering biographical, philanthropic, professional, and financial information of donors and prospects, including individuals, corporations, and foundations
  2. Map personal, business and institutional relationships between donors, prospects, volunteers, and others connected to the Society to inform holistic engagement strategies that maximize giving potential across revenue streams
  1. Conduct quarterly profile audits and refresh priority profiles both within Teams and CRM
  • Implements new research techniques as they arise, striving to deliver a best-in-class prospect research program
  • Lead the identification and qualification of prospects discovered through database screenings and other proactive resources to inform pipeline development and dynamic portfolios
  • Determine unique prospect research strategies surrounding events and specialized funding initiatives
  • Manage relationship building across departments, including Individual Giving, Corporate, Foundations, Peer-to-Peer, etc. through connections found through prospect research
  • Design prospect research data integrity projects within CRM and ensure standards are continuously met
  • Assist in philanthropic strategies set by Individual Giving and other Development teams through creation/maintenance of prospect pipelines within CRM
  • Co-manage Prospect Research Internship program, advising 1-2 interns per quarter through data integrity and research processes

2. Prospect Research Knowledge Development Opportunities, Resources and Tools (30%)

  • Lead Weekly Prospect Research Open Hours, offering prospect research guidance to staff Society-wide
  • Actively participate in professional development to learn, apply and educate others on the latest prospect research skills, tools, and resources
  • Design, maintain and serve as in-house expert for all Prospect Research tools and resources collaborating with all teams to assure tools are being used to the best of their ability
  1. Oversee iWave usage and proficiency
  2. Oversee prospect research request system and its ongoing optimization
  3. Update and optimize prospect research toolkit and Intranet materials
  4. Assist in the development of Prospect Research and Management Salesforce reporting to monitor research and portfolio activities and measure progress against success metrics
  • Serve as secondary administrator for current and future Prospect Research software, including iWave
  • Manage and create research trackers and requests forms from all Development teams

3. Donor Experience Data, Resource and Tool Management (10%)

  • Serve as a member of the Society’s Restricted Giving team and contribute to GAU maintenance and allocation activities
  • Other ad hoc operational / administrative support for the Donor Experience Team

Estimated hiring compensation range for this role is $48,700-$57,900 based on our average compensation schedule (Schedule D). Final offers will be based on candidate geographic location and consider career experience and may vary from this range due to these and other factors.

Requirements

Minimum Education:

  •  BA/BS Degree

Minimum Experience:  3 - 5 years

  • 3-5 years of data management or prospect research experience required.
  • 2+ years of nonprofit experience required.
  • 1+ year of CRM training preferred.
  • Strong skills in relationship building and working across multiple departments
  • Action-oriented, collegial, collaborative, and accessible professional
  • Possess strong research and analytical skills, along with a commitment to producing high detail-oriented high-quality quality work
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously across teams while also working autonomously
  • Able to understand and apply big-picture concepts
  • Excellent time management skills and an ability to work in a deadline-driven, fast-paced environment
  • Strong listening and written and oral communication skills
  • Awareness of industry standards, current trends, and best practices particularly in the areas of prospect research, prospect management, and data analytics.
  • Understanding of fundraising including moves management planning and the donor lifecycle.

Technical/Other:

Experience with Salesforce (preferred) or equivalent CRM database. Strong computer skills: MS Office XP, Database/Reporting tools, Outlook, Microsoft Teams and Internet. Salesforce experience, or similar CRM experience highly preferred. Ability to use GoToMeeting and administer web-based presentations. Ability to utilize donor prospecting and management tools (such as Lexis-Nexis, Donorscape, iWave, Windfall, Target Analytics, etc.) preferred.
